Twenty years after Uttarakhand was granted statehood, an
announcement was made in the state assembly on 4th March Wednesday to make Gairsain its
summer capital. Gairsain is town and Nagar Panchayat in Chamoli district of the
Indian state of Uttrakhand.
Reasons and background
Ø Gairsain is geographically in the centre of
Uttrakhand. People living in Pithoragarh have to travel around 14-15 hours if they
have any work in Dehradun. Making Gairsain capital will reduce everyones time
and money.
Ø Also, it will boost the development of the
hilly region which is most important because Uttrakhand is hill state.
Ø It haven’t been the permanent capital due its
seismic vulnerability .

historical context as political systems with ruling classes that would migrate
to a summer capital, making them less prevalent in modern times.
